Welcome to Thornton Oaks Thornton Oaks is a retirement community in Brunswick, Maine, a small New England town and home of Bowdoin College. Brunswick has been named one of the five best college towns in the country in which to retire by Money magazine, Nov. 2005. In 2000, Brunswick was named one of the best places to retire in New England, also by Money magazine. And Sports Illustrated magazine has just named Brunswick the Good Sports Community of the Year! Thornton Oaks' homes are located on 29 acres wooded acres intertwined with a walking trail. All homes have carefree upkeep provided by Thornton Oaks, including lawn care, snow removal, outside window washing, all painting and exterior maintenance. All homes include patios. Residents may enjoy gardening around their private home, and pets are welcome. Apartment homes are spacious, featuring large windows, extensive lighting, large bathrooms and generous closets. All apartments are furnished with appliances that are maintained as one of the services to residents. A lovely dining room, library, sun room, and multiple rooms for meetings and activities, provide residents with easy opportunities to gather for book discussion, flower arranging, bridge and scrabble and speakers. Our mini-van provides transportation to theater, symphony, shopping, beach and foliage trips, and pick-up/drop off to events on the Bowdoin campus, including the Running Start exercise program and pool available free to all residents. Many residents enjoy the opportunity to audit classes at Bowdoin College or take classes at the Mid Coast Senior College. The Bowdoin International Summer Music Festival, the Maine State Music Theater, the Mid Coast Symphony and the Chocolate Church are just a few of the acclaimed music and art resources in this area. Thornton Oaks is a homeowners cooperative, established in 1990 by Mid Coast Health Services, the leading not-for-profit healthcare provider in the region. Through this affiliation, residents have priority access to (but no contractual obligation to use) a full continuum of health services adjacent in the Mid Coast Senior Health Center: assisted living, Alzheimer's and dementia care, sub acute care and rehabilitation and long term care nursing.
